The Lottery

As we were reading, we periodically stopped and made predictions as to what was going to happen next, as well as why we thought certain things were happening. What was the first prediction you made about what the "lottery" was?

Now that you know what it was, why do you think the villagers held the lottery every year? It doesn't have to be one of the reasons we discussed!

Do you think something like that would take place in the U.S. today? Why?

Please don't forget your first name!

When I read The Lottery, I assumed that the story was going to be modern like lotteries that we have today. The story was the complete opposite that I thought it would be.
I think the villagers held the lottery every year for religious purposes. The person that had a black dot on their paper was offered as a sacrifice. They thought that by doing this, rain would bring them good crops.
No, I don't think the lottery would take place today. We have an ammendment today that says no cruel or unusual punishment. Today this would be considered a cruel punishment.

Hello Book Club 502! Wasn't The Lottery a shocker? I have to say that I was totally not predicting the ending. The author, Shirley Jackson, makes everything sound so rosy in the beginning of the story. I was shocked to find out what the lottery really was at the end. I actually made a connection to Lord of the Flies. I think the author of both books was trying to show how evil human beings can be. I would hope that nothing like this ever happens in the United States, but I do think that we have some "evil" things that happen in the U.S. that we just accept, just the the characters in The Lottery just accepted. I am talking about things like gang violence, racism, etc. What do you think?

The first prediction that I made was that a villager was going to win something.

I think the villagers did the lottery each year because of the overpopulation in the village.

I think something like this would happen in the world today because some villages are overpopulated such as villages in Japan and China.

1) My first prediction about this so-called "Lottery" was that it was a chance to win money.

2) The reason the village held this "Lottery" was because they needed to prevent overpopulation.

3) I don't think this is likely to happen in the U.S. today. The reason for my opinion is because I believe it is a senseless thing to do.
